Werner Pfenning is an orphaned German boy with a skill for fixing radios, forced into becoming a soldier he works with the Nazis to find enemy broadcasts and shut them down. When Werner finds himself in Saint-Malo where Marie has been broadcasting he decides to help her by not disclosing the source of the signal to his fellow soldiers. When the town is bombed Werner helps Marie-Laure escape, only to find himself captured by the invading Americans.
